Making the Grade

C  RiverFest cancellation

Like many of you, I was disheartened to learn last week that this year’s event has fallen victim to the flooding at Haworth Park. I know this was a difficult decision by Megan Lucas and the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, but it was the right decision. I’ve heard some grumblings RiverFest should have been moved to another location, but that would be a logistical nightmare with having to provide electrical power and water for all those barbecue contestants. RiverFest and Haworth Park are synonymous, and if that means waiting a year to spruce up the place, then so be it.

I’ve had plenty of time to digest the architectural drawings of the new home of the Omaha Royals, and two aspects of the park are absurd. The first is the serpentine outfield fence. It’s one thing for a park to have nooks and crannies, but an outfield fence that weaves in and out of its circular design is too much. The second is the seating area down the left field line in which spectators face the third base coaching box. There’s no way – at least by the drawing I have in front of me – a fan sitting in these seats will ever see a left fielder make a catch in the corner.
